Dots Dryer Vent Cleaning keeps dryers humming

FAIRFIELD – Most people never think about cleaning the dryer vents in their homes. But did you know that dryer vents are a leading cause of home fires?

Scott (Dot) Reese, owner of Dot’s Dryer Vent Cleaning in Fairfield, says that when debris begins to clog the dryer vent, the exhaust fumes produced by the dryer begin to back up, creating a potential fire hazard. This can turn an otherwise helpful device into a disaster just waiting to happen.

“I was an inspector for PG&E for over 30 years and saw it first hand,” he said.

Reese retired from the company and was between jobs when a neighbor asked him to help her with her dryer because it stopped working. He pulled up a YouTube DIY video and found the problem was a blocked vent. After unplugging it and putting everything back together it worked like a charm.

“She thought I should do this cleaning as a retirement job,” Reese said.

After thinking about it for some time, he got the permits and set up a website. He advertised on Angie’s List.

The shop’s name came from a neighbor boy who couldn’t say “Scott” and always called him Dot instead. The nickname stuck. He thought it would be a good name for the business.

“I was on vacation when I got my first business call. They asked if I had insurance, and I said yes,” Reese said. “I came back and fixed his dryer and have been busy ever since.”

There are even more reasons to have your dryer vents cleaned. A clogged or even partially clogged dryer vent increases power consumption, increases energy bills, reduces dryer life due to excessive wear and tear, and wastes time drying the same load multiple times.

He takes about 30 to 40 jobs a month throughout Solano County.

This is a small family business with Reese as the only employee.

“I like the job because it gets me out of the house,” he said.
