The operator of a well-known dryer vent cleaning company has been arrested for drunk driving.
Desmond Harris, 53, of Leesburg, was found asleep in a silver Hyundai Genesis at the intersection of the US Highway just after 11 p.m. Wednesday. 27/441 and North Dixie Avenue, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department. Harris is the owner/operator of Covenant Enterprises, a popular dryer hood cleaning business used by many residents of The Villages.
An officer observed the vehicle coming to a stop at a traffic light. The light turned green and then red again, but the vehicle didn’t move. The brake lights did not illuminate, indicating the vehicle may be in the park position.
The officer approached the vehicle and found Harris slumped over the wheel with loud music playing, the report said. Harris woke up and rolled down the window and the officer “could smell the distinct odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle.” Harris was asked if he knew where he was. “No, I haven’t,” he replied. Harris had slurred the speech and admitted he had consumed a 12-ounce “Jack and Coke” that was about 60 percent Jack Daniels whiskey and 30 percent Coca-Cola.
He agreed to participate in field sobriety drills but performed poorly. He initially refused to provide a breath sample, but changed his mind. He submitted two breath samples showing blood alcohol levels of 0.150 and 0.148.
Harris was arrested for drink driving. He was summoned to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,000 bail.
